Tayside Orienteers would like to invite you to SOUL 5 to be held on newly mapped Menzieshill in Dundee. Menzieshill was mapped last year for the British Squad as a world training area, used in particular by the now European Sprint Bronze medalist Kris Jones.
The area is on the hill up behind Ninewells hospital and includes a mix of major roads, streets, paths, car parks, play parks, open areas and blocks of flats. Longer courses can expect to encounter a few climbs.

Pre event information
The event centre (toilets, registration, meeting area - leave kit at your own risk) and parking is at Tayview Primary School on Dickson Avenue. Please remove wet shoes etc at the door.
No space for club tents. The school playgrounds and school hall will act as assembly areas.

DANGER - A retaining wall on the way to the start is currently being supported. It is, or has been, in danger of collapse. Steer clear! The pavement allows room for passing from the short term waiting area (at the road crossing) to the start. Use with care. Follow any instructions from marshals and start officials.
Update: As the number of entries is relatively small we have decided not to allocate start times. Please go to the start when ready and wait for an available slot on your course.

Course 1: remember to turn the map over for the second half of the course.
Directions / Parking
From Perth and Kingsway (west end) - take City Centre/Airport exit off the A90 roundabout. Follow for approx 1km then fork off to the left following "Perth Road”. Cross two roundabouts (keeping to Perth Rd) then take the sharp left turn at the 3rd into Dickson Avenue. Follow for approx 800m and Tayview School will be on your left.
Parking will be in two areas - in front of the school (down a steep slope) and also in the nursery school parking area which is reached from Earn Road (on the left just before the school).There will be a parking official but both areas are white-lined so please park sensibly.
From Dundee centre and Tay Bridge etc follow the riverside road past the airport and across the next roundabout. 1500m later the road swings to the right. Take the next turn to the right onto Perth Road and follow directions as above.
Please drive carefully when arriving and leaving since runners may be crossing Dickson Avenue and other local roads.
Public Transport - take #22 bus or #73 from Dundee city centre to the Earn Crescent stop on Dickson Avenue. The station is a 15 minute walk from the city centre.
Spar shop in the small shopping centre close to the school for food and drinks, including coffee - open Sundays.
Registration & Start Times
Registration from 10.15am. Starts from 11am to 12.30pm
One start for all 7 courses (within 200m of the event centre and warm-up area). The finish is within 200m of the event centre.
Punching start - but please keep to your start time if possible. Please don’t go to the nearby start too early. It is close to housing and it would be good if we can keep any noise to a minimum near the housing area. With this in mind, the starts will be staggered to keep numbers in the area down. Please don’t wait around too long at the finish.
Start - "minus-3 minutes" with course descriptions in the first box.
Please use the designated crossing on the way to the start and from the finish. The junior courses are clear of any major road crossings. Longer courses cross a number of major local roads which are normally quiet on a Sunday. “Caution Runner” signs will be posted but remember the Green Cross code. You will not have right of way.
Be prepared for high temperatures. Bring your own water (although water in the school should be drinkable). Menzieshill is exposed to any winds on a cool day. Be prepared.

C6 Junior Men and Women 3.1km
C7 Young Juniors ( boys and girls) 2.0km
(Classifications as per league standard- Veteran men and women 40+; Supervet 55+; Ultravet 65+; Hypervet 75+; Young Juniors 12-; Juniors 16-)
Warm up area on a stone chipped area.
The event is NOT SIAC active.
Explanation of colour courses
- White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
- Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
- Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
- Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
- Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
- Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
- Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
- Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.
Senior BO and SOA members £12. All other adults £14. Juniors all £6.
Dibbers available free of charge (if you lose one there will be a £30 charge!).

Use your age group when entering e.g MSV- i.e Men's Supervet. If you want to run up a grade use the C course number ( see Courses Info section) as this helps when processing the results for league purposes.

Safety and Risk
A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.
Our forests are at risk from tree pests and diseases. These can dramatically affect the health of our trees, upsetting the delicate ecosystem balance and devastating large areas of woodland.
Pests and diseases hitch a ride in mud and debris on shoes, paws and tyres, ending up in new forests. Here, they can spread rapidly in environments with no natural resilience.
