FINAL DETAILS

Tayside Halloween O event - Friday 3rd November - Final Details

Venue: Dunning Golf Course PH2 ORH

A huge thankyou to the golf course for allowing use of the course, particularly in the current wet conditions.

The carpark is signposted off the B9141/Station Road. Please park on hardstanding area and not on grass.

Registration will be near the clubhouse, probably in a campervan.

There are no indoor facilities, though if desperate, you could ask nicely at one of the local pubs.

It is slippy and wet in places so come prepared!

Registration

From 1800 to 1845 but please don’t turn up at the last minute.

Please bring correct change to pay for your entry - £5 adults/£3 juniors/£1 extra maps

Bring personal dibbers to registration to crosscheck numbers and make sure you clear them.

Hired dibbers will be in named envelopes.

If you have not orienteered before or for a while, come in plenty time for a quick briefing/refresher. If you are in any doubt about anything, please ask.

Collect your maps and loose control descriptions at registration. This is a fun event so feel free to look at your course and work out your strategy, or wait till you start if you want more of a challenge.

Start/Finish

There will be a short briefing then a mass start at 1900 from beside the clubhouse.

The finish will be in front of the clubhouse.

Courses

2 courses, both with a 40 minute time limit. Please come back within the 40 minutes, even if you have not finished.

Short

A straightforward course round the perimeter of the golf course with a few wee diversions.

You just visit all the controls in order including the finish, then go to download.

Long

This consists of a compulsory line course with optional loops. You must visit all the ‘Core’ controls in order, shown joined with solid lines, but there are also optional loops with dashed lines. Note you have to do complete loops.

Controls are worth 10 points each. The more you visit, the higher your score.

The infamous Dunning Witch may be in attendance and will have a bonus control. She will be loitering somewhere in the central small wood. Be polite to her or you may not get to dib!

YOU LOSE ALL YOUR POINT AFTER 40 MINUTES

Safety

A torch for each person is compulsory! Headtorches are recommended as they leave your hands free to hold the map, but a handheld torch will do if that is what you have. You will also need a watch to ensure you come back within the time limit.

A stream runs across the middle of the course and is clearly shown on the map. This is out of bounds and can only be crossed at the bridges. It is also wet and slippy along the banks so keep well clear.

Do not go into the bunkers. Some of these are currently full of water and a considerable hazard.

One of the conditions for us using the golf course is that we do not run across the greens. These are shown on the map and are obvious when you are near. They are very flat, close cropped, and have a flag in the middle. Please avoid!

Social

Rather than stand around in the carpark, we will head for the Kirkstyle Inn which is just across the square. Lovely old pub with an enclosed/heated area outside so no problems with muddy clothes. Children welcome and food served till 2100.

A couple of control collectors would be great so that the organisers can get to the Kirkstyle before the kitchen closes.

There will be two courses. Long and Short. Both with a 40 minute time limit. Please come back after 40 minutes, even if you have not finished.

Short: an easy course mostly following ‘line features’ eg walls and fences, although there may be a couple of shortcuts for the more adventurous. Ideal for first timers or beginners.

Long: for those with some previous orienteering experience. A short ‘core’ course with optional loops and bonus controls.

Safety - Head torches/torches and whistles are compulsory. Check batteries before you come!  A watch with a timer will also be required to help you avoid penalty points!

Primary school-aged children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Older children may go round in pairs, unless they have previous orienteering experience.

There is a stream across the middle of the area. This is strictly out of bounds and can only be crossed using the bridges.

It may be wet and/or cold so check the weather forecast and come suitably dressed/prepared.

It is a Halloween event so prepare to be scared! Screaming is actively encouraged!

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.

Safety and Risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.

Keep It Clean campaign - Forestry Commission Scotland

Our forests are at risk from tree pests and diseases. These can dramatically affect the health of our trees, upsetting the delicate ecosystem balance and devastating large areas of woodland.
Pests and diseases hitch a ride in mud and debris on shoes, paws and tyres, ending up in new forests. Here, they can spread rapidly in environments with no natural resilience.
