Yellow

On the Yellow course there were two starters - the Holliday family from FVO and Liz Prentice. Both eventually completed the course. Owing to some uncertainty as to the times taken, each were declared joint winners, with Holliday junior receiving the prize.

Organiser's Comments

The maximum control card punch points was 230; the maximum points from the ‘treasure hunt’ questions was 168 (which included 18 if you named all the Scottish Orienteering clubs).

Getting the right answer to a question was perhaps the key to getting a good score and the success rate varied from 8 correct answers from 10 attempted questions, and 7 out of 7 (a PO member) to 3 out of 10 (also a PO member!). It was interesting that our top mathmetician estimated the 32.5 feet circumference of the tree at 12 feet! A surprising number of answers (15) said the most obvious door on the ruin was on the S side (by the kite), but there was a much better formed door on the NE side (spotted by 6).

I extended my knowledge and had to concede that a club named after a stretch of water could include ECKO as well as the two I was expecting - CLYDE and SOLWAY. I had decided before the event that FVO was not a correct answer - its a valley. CUNOC (fox emblem) was allowed as a club with animal connections in addition to STAG. I t was hard on the 10 who answered 3 next-size-down-branches, but 6 got the correct answer 4. I still have to check if there is a twelvth car door catch on the ground - if so apologies to the three who answered 12 (6 answered 11 and 5 came up with another number).

Many thanks to David Combe for essential help in getting the controls out (and in) and to other helpers on the day.
