Clothing and weather
Full leg covering is required for tick prevention, and you should inspect yourself for ticks after the event. We recommend shoes with a good grip. Bring your own water and hot drinks for after your run. Please ensure you have suitable clothing depending on the weather and consider sunscreen.
Planners notes
All courses pass through areas of native tree regeneration- please try to avoid damaging young trees as much as possible.
The area around the Hermitage is very popular with tourists. Although courses have been planned to avoid the busiest parts, all courses will use paths which are shared with the general public and there will be walkers, dogs, and possibly cyclists. Please take care and give space to other users of the forest where necessary.
Terrain notes
The terrain at the Hermitage should provide a strong technical and physical challenge for all competitors. It has suffered from wind-blow and forestry operations in parts- courses have been planned to avoid the roughest areas, but runners on the longer courses in particular will encounter rocky sections and areas of fallen trees, brashings and undergrowth (the
bracken growth has been quite extensive over the past fortnight). The most extensive areas of these have been mapped with green vegetation screen to help with route choice.
Out of bounds areas
Several areas are marked as out of bounds, and it is important that these are respected for safety reasons and to avoid sensitive areas. Runners on longer courses may choose to cross a field which a local farmer has allowed us to use, but runners must only use the field margins. The middle section has crops and is clearly marked as out-of-bounds on the map. This will also be marked with tape on posts on the ground, and anyone crossing into the OOB area will be disqualified.
