Planner’s Notes for Tay Score Event 11.12.22

In the interests of a making as fair an event as possible, competitors are urged to note the following…

1.Vegetation screens are not always reliable.

2.Much of the area contains scrub/low vegetation where passage is not always fast.

3. Some paths may be faint, and the frequent public use of the area means that some additional unmapped paths may be found.

4. Protective enclosures surrounding individual trees are frequent in the main wooded area and are not mapped.

5. Storm damage has resulted in several additional uprooted trees.  For this reason, mapped rootstocks (tree roots) will not be used as controls.

6. Some man-made features e.g. benches, may have been added, removed or re-sited.  These frequent changes are not shown on the map.  Where a bench is used as a control site, it appears on the map.

7. Competitors should strictly observe the Out-of-Bounds areas, namely the streets bounding the area and, of course, the motorway.  These are marked as OOB on the map.

8. One part of the area contains a number of crags, some of them high and dangerous.  Courses have been planned to avoid these, but be wary of these if you stray in their vicinity.

9. Competitors on the Long course may encounter a barbed wire fence bounding the open area. Exercise care in crossing this.  This does not affect the Short course, where access to/from the open area will be by way of a gate with a control on it.

Course Information

2 score courses. In score courses you can visit the controls in any order within the time limit. Some controls get more points than others. Points are deducted if you're late back so you need an accurate watch. Choice of 45 minute novice score course where more controls will be on or near paths or 1 hour score course with more difficult controls included. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult if they choose the long score course.

Livestock in the fields:- there may be cattle or sheep in the fields and rough grazing areas. Please avoid disturbing them during your run. All fences must be crossed at the marked crossing points only, and gates must be kept closed.

Explanation of Score courses

You don't have to visit all the controls! There is usually a time limit, instead of a set course. Points are scored for visiting controls, and deducted for finishing over the time limit. You decide which controls to visit, and in which sequence. Sometimes controls have different points values. You will need to carry a watch or phone, so you know how long you have been out.

Safety and Risk

Keep It Clean campaign - Forestry Commission Scotland

Our forests are at risk from tree pests and diseases. These can dramatically affect the health of our trees, upsetting the delicate ecosystem balance and devastating large areas of woodland.
Pests and diseases hitch a ride in mud and debris on shoes, paws and tyres, ending up in new forests. Here, they can spread rapidly in environments with no natural resilience.
