Club social - a brief review

Thankyou to everyone who came to today's social at Birnam Arts Centre - and thankyou especially to our guest of honour Roger Scrutton, president of SOA. Thankyou also to Moira and Elaine for organising the day, to Jane and Bill for their contributions, and to John A for facilitating access to the Arts Centre. Here's a brief review of the day...

Around 25 TAY members came along for a day where the focus was informal chat and good food away from the pressures of an event. Seven of us had met earlier for a walk up Birnam Hill, and joined the rest for an excellent lunch including (of course) some fabulous cakes.

After a brief welcome address from club Chair David Sloan, Roger Scrutton gave us a really interesting insight into the goals set by the SOA and was then available for questions on retaining and growing membership, including schools orienteering and building club members's skills in competing and organising events. Jane brought along the club's laptop and SportIdent equipment and members got the chance to have a play with it. We hope to run a training course one evening to encourage more TAY folks to become familiar with the computing side of orienteering.

Bill M was on hand for any orienteering related queries and some members brought along event maps to dissect with him. Davie and Elaine showed off their maps from the Swiss 5 Days - a few more contours and rock than you'd find in Tentsmuir...

A highlight of the day was the unveiling of the new club orienteering top - look out for it in upcoming races! Thanks once again to Elaine for liasing with the supplier Siven and for organising orders.

Through the day, the committee was gathering ideas to contribute to the Club Development Plan, currently in draft. What we can say is that we want to have lots more socials of this nature, whether at a weekend or a weekday evening, maybe after a run. Watch this space for more information (and if you have any ideas, please do get in touch with any of the committee in person or by email).
