Terrain - There is a mix of terrain – woodland with good contour features, some bracken and windblow and an area of open heather. There is a good path network and some points with expansive views over the countryside.

Take care as there are cliffs and steep slopes along the south edge of the hill. There will be no need to go close to the edge of the cliffs.

The ground off the paths will be uneven, so wear footwear with some grip.

It is good practice to carry a whistle in case of emergency.

Please be aware of others within the area, for example dog walkers and cyclists.

Full leg cover mandatory to protect from brambles etc and ticks.

Please remember to check yourself for ticks after the event.

Course Information

Map: scale 1:10,000, contour interval 5m.

The event is a club summer social and will take the form of a score event in teams of 3, with a time limit of 50 minutes (TBC). Non-Tay members are welcome! The 3 team members will start together and devise their plan for the course. It is anticipated that each member will then run separately and the scores of the 3 members will be totalled at the end to give a team score. The time limit is 50 minutes (TBC) which is set to include some time after punching the start box to devise a team plan. Phones are not allowed on the course for the purposes of contacting your team-mates!

The penalty for returning later than 50 minutes (TBC) after your start punch is 10 points per minute (or part of).

There will be a mix of easy and hard controls, and it will be up to each team to divide them out according to ability. Harder (or further away) controls will be worth more points. The same control will not be counted more than once in the final team total.

In the final total, there will be an extra score weighting given to runners based loosely on age and experienced/novice orienteer. However the focus is on a fun event, not on an intricate scoring system!

Start and finish will be 10 minutes walk from the car park up the gravel path. After you have finished, you must return to Download at the Car Park so that we know you are back safely.

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.

Safety and Risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.

Keep It Clean campaign - Forestry Commission Scotland

Our forests are at risk from tree pests and diseases. These can dramatically affect the health of our trees, upsetting the delicate ecosystem balance and devastating large areas of woodland.
Pests and diseases hitch a ride in mud and debris on shoes, paws and tyres, ending up in new forests. Here, they can spread rapidly in environments with no natural resilience.
