Updated Kinnoull Hill map

Vital resource for orienteering in Tayside

In the first part of an exciting project between Tayside Orienteers and the Tay Landscape Partnership a brand new orienteering map of Perth’s popular Kinnoull Hill has recently been created.

The area has long been used for orienteering for both local and national events but the existing map was no longer fit for purpose owing to vegetation and other changes on the hill since the map was first produced.  Thanks to the support of the Tay Landscape Partnership the map has now been completely redrawn, taking advantage of the latest “LIDAR” data.  Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is now a well-established technology capable of creating superb data for use in orienteering mapping. Lasers are fired in very rapid pulses, thousands of times a second, and essentially the processed data of millions of 3D co-ordinates can be joined up to form 3D models of the landscape.

The new Kinnoull map will enable quality orienteering events to continue to be held on the hill and, importantly, provide opportunities for more people to discover the sport and learn valuable navigational skills.  The year long project with the Tay Landscape Partnerhsip also includes training local people, including leaders of groups working with young people, to teach orienteering, as well as the redesign and rebuild of the popular “Permanent Orienteering Course.” Events using the new map will be carefully designed to encourage newcomers to try out the sport.

The Tay Landscape Partnership is a four year project celebrating the landscapes of where the Rivers Tay and Earn meet. The project offers exciting opportunities for local people of all ages to get involved in projects which put the Tay on the map whilst giving a fun day out meeting new people and learning new skills and knowledge.

The overall Tay Landscape Partnership project is a £2.6 million initiative principally funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, reconnecting people with the natural, built and cultural heritage of the area.  Orienteering, as a sport which encourages a closer connection with the landscape, is a great fit with the Tay Landscape Partnership’s specific goal of encouraging and supporting a greater diversity and quantity of people to learn about and more actively participate in their landscape and its heritage.
