Perthshire Adventure Festival

Can you navigate the Maze-O?

Orienteering will be showcased at this year's Perth & Kinross Adventure Festival on Saturday 13 June, along with a host of other fantastic opportunities.

Perth & Kinross Schools Orienteering Festival 2015

Well done to all the schools that took part in the 2015 Perth & Kinross Schools Orienteering Festival.

Tay family coaching day

Tayside Orienteers had a packed programme last weekend, with two coaching events taking place in Perth, and a change in focus from the recent series of competitive Scottish league events.

Falling just short at the Compass Sport Trophy

A depleted Tayside Orienteers team travelled up to a beautifully sunny Aboyne yesterday, to take part in the Scottish round of the Compass Sport Trophy, at Balnagowan Forest. Unfortunately, despite a valiant effort, due to injury and unavailability we didn't have the coverage across all classes to challenge the strongest clubs, but there were some excellent individual performances which give us hope for next year!

Club members in good form in Edinburgh this weekend

Several TAY club members made the journey south to Edinburgh Southern OC's 50th Anniversary weekend races this weekend. On Saturday, the first race in the 2015 Scottish Urban Orienteering League took place on the intricate parkland and built-up area of the Heriot Watt University campus at Riccarton, while on Sunday, the focus moved to Dalkeith Park for a South of Scotland O League race (SoSOL).

Club development news

A new Club Development Officer and Level 2 Club Coach!

A couple of great developments for the club to report this weekend—firstly, Mel Nicoll has been appointed as Club Development Officer, a role that will see her work on a number of projects to develop orienteering in the Tayside area over the next year and a half.

Also, after several months' practical and theory work, club coach Moira Laws passed her Level 2 Coach assessment. This qualification means that Moira can now deliver more advanced coaching sessions up to Technical Difficult 5, which allows her to offer coaching for seniors as well as juniors.

Congratulations to Mel and Moira on their achievements, and we look forward to working with them in the coming year!

Upcoming event details for 2015

We've confirmed dates and locations for some of our programme of events for 2015, starting with a Local Event at Kinnoull Hill on Sunday 1st March. The club is also organising a Scottish Orienteering League race at Dunalastair, on June 21st. This year, we're also putting on more coaching opportunities, targeted at club members of all abilities. Check the Events page for more details!

The dates and venues for this year's Compass Point Scottish Orienteering League series and bto Scottish Urban Orienteering League series have also been finalised, so good luck to all club members taking part!

Dave Prentice

It's with the greatest sadness that Tayside Orienteers share the news that our friend and clubmate Dave Prentice died earlier this week whilst hiking in Uganda. Dave contributed hugely to the club over many years as mapper, event co-ordinator, planner, organiser, controller. His energy and enthusiasm were the drivers behind so many of our activities, from the Perth and Kinross Schools Championships to countless local, regional and national events, and his generosity in sharing ideas, skills and encouragement with other club members helped us grow collectively as a club.

Dave leaves a huge hole in our club, but also a legacy of a commitment to providing high quality and fun orienteering to people of all ages in Tayside and further afield. We'll miss him greatly, and our thoughts and sympathies are with his wife Liz, and children Roland, Rowena and Laura at this very sad time. Dave's funeral will take place on Monday February 9th at 3pm at Perth Crematorium.

Club Development Officer—Applications invited

An exciting opportunity has arisen to help grow the sport of orienteering in Tayside! The Scottish Orienteering Association is seeking to appoint a highly motivated person who can work in collaboration with Tayside Orienteers and independently to develop orienteering in Tayside through a series of development projects. This post is funded at one day per week to the end of August 2016, and closing date for applications is 31 December 2014. A similar position is open to work with Mar Orienteering Club.

The SOA website provides more information and details on how to apply.
